I was a child
when I discovered the intoxication of wisteria. I
know that I was under ten years old and there was
this plant that grew around the old stone pillar
that supported the wrought iron gate into our
church. I passed it one day and was totally blown
away by its beauty and its powerful scent I could
not believe that something so exotic was growing in
England in our village around our church gate, its
beauty was enrapturing and I could not leave it,
I went and stood underneath its blossoms and just
filled my lungs with its scent.
Well as you can imagine the love for this climber
has stayed with me and every where I go I look for
wisterias. The painting you see here is from an
observation of one growing on a cottage at Higham on
the Hill in Warwickshire, the light on the higher
blossoms bleached from the strong sunlight and the
contrast with the beautiful warm hues of the soft
brickwork of the building from below was my main
drive for this painting.
